Chocolate bar

30 : 03 : 2015 Nendo : BbyB : Chocolate

Tokyo – Belgian chocolatier BbyB has opened its first Tokyo store with a striking two-tone space by Japanese product and interior design studio Nendo.

  • The store’s designs were inspired by the brand's minimalist, modular packaging
  • Customers can browse flavours housed in perspex drawers

The brainchild of Antwerp-based chocolatier and two-Michelin star chef Bart Desmidt, BbyB’s packaging has drawn plaudits from the confectionery world, and inspired Nendo’s designs for the brand’s first overseas retail space. ‘We turned the shop space into a 3D version of the chocolate packaging,’ explains Nendo. ‘The chocolates seem to float in a transparent ‘chest of drawers’, placed at the centre of the shop.’ Customers can browse a colour swatch of 30 different flavours housed in separate perspex drawers that feels like an installation in a gallery space. The long, narrow store is split into two distinct spaces, marked by a cleanly delineated colour change and the start of a 12.5-metre-long bar that serves as a counter for BbyB’s rear café.

The Big Picture: Interior designers around the world are integrating packaging into the aesthetic, creating a seamless customer experience, with ease of access underpinning the consumer journey. Read our Packaged Interiors microtrend for more.
