Mind rave: Meditation nightclub turns brainwaves into light and sound

14 : 01 : 2015 Las Vegas : Lia Chavez : Rehabstudio

Las Vegas – Performance artist Lia Chavez has hacked into consciousness to create a ‘meditation nightclub’ that turns brainwaves into light and sound.

Visitors to The Octave of Visible Light: A Meditation Nightclub wear an EEG headset that reads their brainwaves and transmits the information to an audio-visual system. The light and sounds emitted by the system respond to each person’s brain activity, producing a customised set played in real time directly from the mind.

‘We have created a system that aligns three types of frequencies: brainwaves, sound and light,’ Chavez tells LS:N Global. ‘We have brought these three oscillations, if you will, into perceptual alignment.’

The installation, which Chavez developed in collaboration with London creative technology company rehabstudio, is set in P3 Studio, the art gallery of luxury hotel The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. While outside all is mayhem, in these small adjoining rooms it is possible to experience an uncanny insight into the nature of consciousness.

‘I created this experience thinking of Las Vegas and wanted to wink cheekily at the whole context,’ says Chavez. ‘This is both an opportunity to re-align and experience healing, as well as a bit of a spiritual striptease.’
