Bangkok – The Yim Huai Kwang hostel –yim means smile – offers budget travellers a unique glimpse into the multi-faceted Thai identity through a concept that blends two eras of Thai design.
The central Bangkok hostel is housed in a former condominium built in the 1970s that retains a strong sense of the time with a modernist architectural style. Rather than strip away the ageing façade and interior, design studio Supermachine built on it, emphasising the duality of both the building and of Bangkok’s cultural identity.
Most of the vintage design elements were kept intact and the feel of old Thailand was further enhanced with the extensive use of bamboo. The interior features juxtapositions of a variety of bold, eye-catching concepts, including a giant clock made of colourful toys that represent the chaotic yet vibrant feel of contemporary Bangkok. The hostel further emphasises local culture with art exhibitions, yoga sessions and creative events.
In line with the Designer Bunks microtrend, Yim Huai Kwang demonstrates how design can be used to create a comfortable and affordable environment for travellers, but more importantly, to provide a unique, local experience.
