Hypno-scape: Studio plays with sensory elements

19 : 02 : 2014 Installation : Immersive : United Visual Artists

London – Known for its expertise in experiential design, creative studio United Visual Artists (UVA) explores the relationship between light, sound and movement in Momentum, a hypnotic, idiosyncratic and fully immersive installation at The Curve Gallery at the Barbican Centre.

The exhibition, Momentum, features a set of pendulum-like instruments installed along the 90-metre long gallery that are programmed to swing in natural and unexpected motions. Visitors’ points of view and perceptions of time play a pivotal role in the individual experience. Using the architecture of the space, the pendulums project light and sound, throwing visitors’ shadows.

‘Combining sophisticated research-led technology with a minimal aesthetic, UVA is known for site-specific works of great beauty and clarity, in which the visitor is always an active participant,’ says Jane Alison, senior curator at The Barbican. UVA has responded to the tension between nature and the synthesised, questioning viewers about their relationship with technology.

Brands and designers are increasingly using sound and technology to create more sensory and engaging environments. For more, read our Soundscapes macrotrend.
