Hua Hin, Thailand – The Once Upon a Cream ice cream shop may not be what you expect of a beach resort store. Its interior is open, modern and clean without any references to the beach.
The ice cream parlour, designed by Bangkok agency MADA Design Factory, references churning and the physical labour involved in ice cream-making with a motif of cogs running throughout the interior and exterior. Design elements include exposed copper work, natural materials such as wood, and a hint of whimsy with the red and white tabletops.
LS:N Global first identified a movement towards using lo-fi materials to create a feeling of Mechanical Grace at Dutch Design Week 2011. This Thai iteration demonstrates how far-reaching the design direction has become.
