Commuter cuisine

25 : 04 : 2016 New York City : Underground : Subway

New York – TurnStyle is a new food hall that aims to bring quality food to commuters.

  • TurnStyle is located in the Columbus Circle subway station in New York
  • Almost 30 food vendors are located along the corridors that lead to street exits

Developer Susan Fine conceived TurnStyle as an underground street of restaurants, and wanted to create a space that made people feel they were ‘on a street in a home town that they grew up in’, she says.

This meant creating spaces that people could walk into. Some have tables and seating and others have doors to make you feel that you are entering a different establishment.

When curating the list of vendors, Fine wanted to make sure it didn’t feel like typical transit food, choosing to leave out most big brands in favour of more local ones. Alongside Pressed Juicery and Starbucks, one of the few national brands, there is vegan restaurant Blossom Du Jour, tea parlour Bosie Patisserie and Gastronomie 491, a gourmet grocery store and café.

The goal was to provide food for the people from all walks of life that come through the station, providing a mix of more substantial meals and items you pick up on the go, such as a green juice.

The Big Picture

Underground stations are being rethought in terms of their food and retail offers. For more, read about The New Stand, a novel take on the subway newsstand kiosk.
