Berlin – Art collective Zeitguised has created a living, breathing collection of garments as part of an experimental investigation into the fundamentals of fashion.

  • Geist.xyz uses art to examine possibilities in fashion, including moving and transforming textiles
  • Zeitguised has worked with brands including Lexus, Absolut and fashion label Esther Perbandt

To create the collection, Zeitguised used textile simulation software to draft sewing patterns and stitch materials together. The resulting garments were fed through procedural and generative pattern software, including a program designed to reproduce images of biological growth.

The final stage involved connecting the movement of the pattern to the behaviour of the textile, enabling the clothes to be driven by their own inertia.

‘The synthetic processes we describe are not machine-made, they are thought of and programmed manually by humans,’ says Henrik Mauler, founder of Zeitguised. ‘To think of these rules in a design-driven context is truly art, on the same level as intuitive handcraft.’

The Big Picture

As more of our lives are spent online, the meaning of ‘reality’ and ‘authenticity’ is increasingly called into question. ‘Real’ no longer trumps ‘virtual’, as LS:N Global examined in our Poly-reality design direction.
