Dutch Design Week 2015 : Print and wear

19 : 10 : 2015 Print Me : Martijn Van Strien : Dutch Design Week 2015

Dutch Design Week 2015 – Dutch designer Martijn van Strien has re-imagined the clothing supply chain with his Post-Couture Collective collection.

  • The collection can be downloaded online or delivered in a self-assembly kit
  • Buyers can personalise the clothing to fit their exact measurements, appealing to the Print Me generation

Presented during Dutch Design Week, van Strien’s six-piece collection is based on his label mphvs’ collection One Off. People can download the designs online, and have the 3D-knitted fabric produced and laser-cut at their local Makerspace studio. If a Makerspace studio is not available, then Post-Couture Collective will send a kit of the personalised clothing directly to the consumer, where she can assemble it at home.

‘I believe the fashion industry is one of excess, over-consumption and selling massive amounts of generic products,’ says van Strien. ‘By offering people a chance to influence and be part of the design and production of their garments, this will create much more attractive products than the current mass-manufacturing industry does. Who wouldn’t choose a garment that is designed and made especially for them and their body shape?’

The Big Picture

Consumers are increasingly aware of the problem of waste in the clothing industry and designers are taking a Whole-system Thinking approach to solutions. For more on Dutch Design Week, visit our Seed and Shows sections throughout the week.
