Abstract clothing

Denmark – Students at Design School Kolding have created Abstract_, a fashion brand that hands creative control over to the customer’s subconscious.

  • Social media has become a primary medium of expression in an increasingly digital world
  • Abstract_ is a platform for people to turn these expressions into physical pieces

For their final project, designers Julie Helles EriksenBjørn Karmann and Kristine Boesen created Abstract_, a website that enables customers to create custom designs by recording their thoughts and emotions.

To generate a unique pattern, the user writes a short message while an algorithm records the words and type speed to generate a design. Their facial expressions are also recorded and analysed through facial recognition software that decides the colour of the garment.

‘We wanted to connect the consumer with the garment so they will care more about it and wear it for longer,’ Eriksen tells LS:N Global. ‘The customer can write their personal story into the clothes. Each piece is unique and no two patterns are the same, which means you have your own shirt that expresses your own story.’

The Big Picture: In our macrotrend The Convergence Economy, we look at Sensory Transduction and how a new generation of data-driven creatives are working at the intersection of art, interaction and information.
