Flat pack is back: Designer showcases production process

Milan – British lighting and furniture company Tom Dixon is livening up its booth at Milan Design Week with a showcase in industrial production.

Tom Dixon’s ‘Flash Factory’, part of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, gives visitors the opportunity to see how the brand’s products are created. For example, a digitally manufactured brass lamp will be available either flat-packed to the size of an envelope or assembled on site by the Tom Dixon team.

The installation aims to demonstrate the power of the designer as a ‘digital manufacturer’. Other flat-pack products that can be assembled on the spot include the ‘Offcut’ bench, made of discarded offcuts from wood production.

Demonstrating the craft and story behind product creation is becoming an increasingly important part of selling high-end products, a topic explored in our Luxury Market report.

LS:N Global will be reporting from Salone Internazionale del Mobile and publishing the top exhibitions, products and trends throughout the week.
