Eindhoven – Design graduate Julie de Mol will present a series of sculptural objects for the home at Dutch Design Week inspired by the olfactory qualities of raw materials.

De Mol’s project Raw Essence will be exhibited at the Design Academy Eindhoven graduation show, which opens on 18 October at the Witte Dame building. Harnessing the natural scents of hay, pine and beeswax, the designer created three objects dedicated for use in the home. While two of the sculptural pieces are designed to release a fragrance, the third uses the qualities of a raw material to absorb smells in the kitchen.

Raw Essence was inspired by traditional practices of using raw materials to influence our wellbeing and create a comforting ambience. ‘I combined the three natural scents into a specific bouquet that evokes the intimate nature of a home,’ de Mol tells LS:N Global.

Designers are increasingly using fragrance to improve our wellbeing and enchant our senses, and retailers are following suit. LS:N Global will be reporting live from Dutch Design Week, so look out for our coverage of the event in the Seed and Shows sections.
