Eindhoven – Dutch design duo rENs – Renee Mennen and Stefanie van Keijsteren – partnered with global carpet company Desso for Re-Vive, a project that reinvigorates old carpets with a unique dyeing process.
Desso gave Mennen and van Keijsteren old carpets that would have otherwise been thrown away, and the duo hand-dyed them in red. The dye reacted differently with the various yarns, meaning each carpet resulted in a different colour and pattern.
'[It is a] testament to the idea of giving customers exciting new concepts and designs from existing materials,' says rENs. 'Using healthy materials, the concept calls for smart design to recycle, reuse and remanufacture leading to a more sustainable economic model.'
The collaboration between Desso and rENs was born out of their shared interest in sustainability and their hope for 'a society where imagination is used to find better ways to make things'.
Re-Vive reminds LS:N Global of a recent project by London studio Re-Do, where new appliances are created out of functioning parts of old machines.
