Amsterdam – London design studio, Re-Do has manufactured new appliances using the electrical components of machines that were destined for landfill, in a series now on display at Hôtel Droog in Amsterdam.
Appliances are often thrown away when the exterior becomes damaged, wasting the usable electrical parts. Re-Do has gathered these parts to create an upcycled toaster, kettle and coffee maker, adding new materials such as cork and glass.
The project follows the studio’s vision to reduce mass production and consumption. ‘Sustainability is more popular and more superficial than ever before,’ say Re-Do founders Gaspard Tiné-Berès and Tristan Kopp. ‘We [want] to change consumer behaviour and promote re-use and fixing in order to extend the life of each product.’
In our vision of The Future Family, people will hack their own homes – and appliances – to create sustainable Eco-homes.
