Hole-y music: Textiles made from organ sheet punchcards

17 : 04 : 2014 Milan : Salone Internazionale Del Mobile : Studio Glithero

Milan – Woven Songs brings together the worlds of two artisans – a weaver and an organ-maker – to create textiles in the spirit of The Convergence Economy.

Studio Glithero, comprising design duo Tim Simpson and Sarah van Gameren, has worked with life-long weaver Wil van den Broek and master organ-maker Leon van Leeuwen to gain a mutual understanding of each other’s crafts to make something new. Woven Songs, an exhibition of the resulting textiles, was on display at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2014. The fabrics were inspired by the use of punchcards that weavers use in looms and organs use to read music, transforming one coded craft into another and creating ‘woven music’.

LS:N Global recently noted the merging of different art forms, and examined how symbiosis can bring the best out of different brands, companies and products. For more, see The Convergence Economy macrotrend.
