Odd job: Studio Job and Pieke Bergmans collaborate on outsize collection

Milan – Another collaboration from the Netherlands! Studio Job and Pieke Bergmans are presenting their first collection, ‘Wonderlamp’, this week.

‘As these seasoned designers share a semiotic palette and speak a similar visual language, this is actually a very natural collaboration,’ says LS:N Global design editor, Caroline Till.

The collection features everyday items – a Studio Job staple – rendered in oversized scale and unexpected materials. Each also features Bergmans’ signature Dali-esque, dripping bulbs. All are presented without titles.

‘We didn’t bother with names,’ Studio Job co-founder Job Smeets tells LS:N Global. ‘Because everybody knows what they are.’

There’s a torch mounted on the wall through its lamplight and a hanging strip light whose tube dips in the middle. The only piece in the collection that is not a normal household object is an Aladdin lamp, whose bulb appears like a genie from its spout.

Interestingly, in stark contrast to the opinions of many interviewees the LS:N Global team has spoken with this week – including Yves Behar, Alisdhair Willis and Ambra Medda – Studio Job is not concerned with the environment nor with design offering wider solutions to society’s problems.

‘We’re not interested in solving other people’s problems, we have enough of our own,’ says Smeets. ‘Instead, we try to ask questions.’
