Vienna – What do crystal and candy have in common? According to design duo, Bertille & Mathieu (Bertille Laguet and Mathieu Rohrer), a lot. Working with 200-year-old crystal company, Lobmeyr, the duo created an Experimental Sweet Factory of crystal-inspired sweets.

The installation was part of Vienna Design Week’s Passionswege program, which sees international designers join forces with Viennese heritage brands. Laguet and Rohrer visited the Lobmeyr factory for inspiration, where they noted the similarities between the manufacturing of crystals and sugar candy.

‘Both start with sand, melt with the heat, become transparent and can be blown, moulded or shaped,’ Laguet tells LS:N Global.

The pair’s own sweet factory consists of sugar lollipops made using Lobmeyer’s crystal pieces as stamps, that were sold for a bargain €1. They are ‘the most accessible Lobmeyr experience and an ephemeral luxury pleasure’, says Laguet.
