Tel Aviv – Shenkar College of Engineering and Design graduate Andrey Grishko, co-founder of design studio AndreyAndShay, has designed an open-source machine for printing furniture and products.
The Woven Furniture maker can create lightweight and strong products by winding a resin-soaked thread around a mould using a computer-controlled arm. Once the resin-soaked threads have set, the mould can be removed, leaving behind a shell for a lampshade or a stool.
‘Open-source and 3D printing are a part of a growing set of tools that enable today’s designers [to] operate as micro-manufacturers that define their own conditions for making products,’ says Grishko.
These new techniques are revolutionising the way in which designers manufacture products. For more innovative examples of 3D printing and new ways of making, see our Neo-Facture design direction.
