Milan – ‘There aren’t many iconic fabrics,’ says Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat CEO Anders Byriel, ‘and we would have to agree. But Hallingdal 65 is one of them.’
In a celebratory exhibition during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Kvadrat invited young designers to use the material in a contemporary way.
The wool and viscose tweed is celebrated for its durability and craft, Byriel tells LS:N Global, and it evokes strong feelings for him too: ‘Hallingdal 65 is our company’s oldest product and so is very emotional for us. People just do not make this type of fabric any more.’
Blocked colour and playful shapes filled the exhibition and designs from 32 designers, including Studio Glithero, Mischer’Traxler and Raw-Edges, turned this timeless textile into items such as hammocks, screens and tents.
Byriel says the many designers featured were connected by ‘a sense of humour, a casualness, but with a quiet strictness in their design’.
