Go with the Flow: Fabric dissolves in water

Eindhoven – Dutch designer Ilke Theeuwes presented her Becoming concept for dissolvable clothing as part of the Flow exhibition at Dutch Design Week this week. Theeuwes printed a blue pattern on to a white fabric that is then dissolved in water, leaving a blue resin on the wearer’s skin.

‘I wondered: ‘how can I dissolve’?’ says Theeuwes. ‘Then I started to think: ‘how can textiles dissolve?’ After the material has vanished in the water, the blue substance is no longer confined to the material structure,’ says Theeuwes. ‘It becomes totally chaotic as it no longer has a fabric to stand on.’

Part of the Flow exhibition, one of the highlights of the week, Becoming explores a new take on the idea of fast fashion, with clothing that disappears.

LS:N Global will report on the key trends and exhibitions at Dutch Design Week next week in our Micro Markets section.
