New York – The New Yorker magazine has released its first augmented reality (AR) front cover.

  • On the Go features the image of a woman on the subway, which is animated when viewed through an app
  • Readers can explore a 3D cityscape by changing the perspective of the camera

The latest edition of the popular American journal features an AR front cover illustrated by Christoph Niemann and revealed using the Uncovr app.

Niemann worked with The New Yorker art director Françoise Mouly to create the design for the magazine’s annual Innovators issue. When the app is open and the camera is held over the cover, the images spring to life, revealing a cityscape complete with skyscrapers, moving yellow cabs and some hidden surprises.

In 2014, The New Yorker released a GIF magazine cover, also illustrated by Niemann, which was the first time it had used an animated cover on its online and app versions.

The Big Picture

The boundaries between print and digital are blurring so that one no longer exists independently of the other. This is being reflected by the collaboration between digital creators and print magazines such as Garage and The Mill.
