New York – A new civic project in Brooklyn will help to provide locally grown food for the surrounding community. Brooklyn Grange, a large-scale rooftop farm, will supply vegetables to nearby consumers.
The one-acre area will be filled with 1m pounds of soil to grow organic produce, helping to reduce carbon emissions and cutting the costs of importing vegetables to the city.
The seasonal produce will be grown for nine months of the year and sold to the local community at an onsite stand, providing a relationship between farmer and consumer. The project has the potential to transform dramatically the way large cities produce, distribute and consume food. This locally minded civic project is tapping the future need for sustainable solutions as we begin to navigate the Turbulent Teens.
