Melbourne – Mr Big Stuff, a soul food restaurant and cocktail bar referencing 70s and 80s American popular culture, has opened in the city centre.
Undoubtedly borrowing its name from Jean Knight's 1971 hit record, Mr Big Stuff pays homage to the soul food of the American Deep South as well to the music and culture of the 1970s and 80s.
Designed by architects and interior design agency Techne Architecture and branding agency Can I Play, the interiors are low-lit and glazed with an orange hue. Exposed concrete floors, neon signs and timber also nod to the nostalgic, 70s-inspired theme.
References to films, music and tv of the era, including the first 3D film, are woven into details such as the logo, typography, menus, beer mats and bottle labels.
Last year, LS:N Global identified a resurgence of 70s nostalgia and referencing in current pop culture. Fore more, read our Sepia-stalgia microtrend.
