Ahead of the game: Nike unveils 3D-printed sports bag for World Cup

Brazil – Until now, 3D-printed fashion has been the province of avant-garde designers such as Iris van Herpen. But Nike has stepped in with a commercial application of the technology that combines practicality with high fashion flair.

The sportswear brand’s 3D-printed sports bag, designed for selected players in the 2014 World Cup, is neon green with a black mesh printed from laser-sintered nylon. The detachable leather upper slots into the 3D-printed base. Nike says the bag, Football Rebento, is the first 3D-printed football bag in the world.

The limited-edition bag will be given to players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney. The premium bag is accented with gold plates engraved with the player’s name. ‘We wanted to create something that was truly special for the game’s greatest players,’ says Martin Lotti, creative director of Nike Football.
