Paris – Global sales of French cognac reached record levels in 2011 owing to a sharp rise in demand from the Chinese market.
Asia accounted for more than one-third of global demand, and volumes of the spirit increased by 20% in China alone, according to the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac.
In the year to October 2011, 163.4m bottles of cognac were exported worldwide, an 8.5% increase on the previous year. Sales in Europe rose by 0.4% to 46.9m bottles.
The rising demand for cognac in Asia heralds an emerging spirits market in the region. For more, read the New Markets Rising section of our Drinks Futures report.
