Sensory swirl: Fred Segal unveils DIY perfume kit

05 : 11 : 2013 Perfume : Fragrance : Commodity

Santa Monica, California – Retailer Fred Segal is launching The Blend, a curated fragrance oil kit that enables customers to create customised scents according to ‘recipes’ or their own preferences.

The Blend contains 10 scented roller balls, each numbered, colour-coded and assigned a name such as Floral, Citrus or Musk. The kit also contains recipes with their own names, such as Regatta, Paradise or Tryst. The recipes are visualised using the colour code. Tryst, for example, is created using three swirls of Epicure No 03, one swirl of Spice No 04 and three swirls of Spice No 07.

‘After years of creating custom-blended fragrances for elite clientele, we have taken our knowledge and expertise, and developed a way for women to recreate the concept on their own,’ said Elena Severin, national brand director of The Blend by Fred Segal, in a media release.

Brands are targeting women’s more developed olfactory sensibilities by incorporating scent into their products, as we described in our Sensory Splurge microtrend.

The Blend also harnesses the visual cues of Kaizen Living to give consumers a sense of control and active participation.
