Paris – A new exhibition of innovative projects in architecture and design in Paris, Alive: New Design Frontiers, explores biotechnology and its implications on engineering and materials.
The exhibition is divided into five themes, from potential sustainable engineering solutions to provocative ideas for the future. Designers show how they have mimicked or hacked into nature to promote sustainable manufacturing and to tackle ethical issues relating to emerging technologies, such as new luxury materials fashioned from human tissue.
‘I believe we have entered a new era,’ says Carole Collett, deputy director of Central Saint Martins’ Textile Futures Research Centre and the exhibition’s curator. ‘And we need to produce like nature does: using sunlight as a power source and without producing toxic waste by-products.’
The exhibition will run at the Espace Fondation EDF until 1 September 2013.
We have entered a new era that redefines the designer’s toolkit and brings scientist and designer collaborations to the fore. To learn more about the biotechnological revolution, read our Biohacking microtrend.
