Custom Made: New Magazine Spotlights Artisans

30 : 05 : 2013 Magazine : Publication : Storytelling

UK – What happens when a top London magazine creative moves to the countryside? In this case, the result is Hole & Corner , a new publication celebrating the traditional craftsmanship to be found in rural communities.

The bi-annual magazine, launched in late May by publisher-turned-Dorset-resident Sam Walton, is dedicated to ‘celebrating craft, beauty, passion and skill’. Its first issue profiles one of the UK’s leading “stone carvers”: http://www.teucerwilson.co.uk/home/, storied London shoemaker John Lobb, a family of Dorset millers and one of the world’s best cricket bat makers.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the project, Walton said his conversations with Dorset artisans piqued his curiosity. ‘It was fascinating to hear about the problems they were facing, the processes involved in creating products and even the length of time people had devoted to their trade or craft,’ he told Coolhunter. ‘People are looking for independent provenance now of their food, their clothes, their furniture. They want to know the stories behind the creative and manufacturing processes.’

The magazine features striking, understated photographs of the artisans at work. The first issue is available online for £10.
