Immersive seasoning

26 : 04 : 2017 TeamLab : Tokyo : Hospitality

Japan – Art collective teamLab has created an immersive dining experience that responds to diners’ movements.

    • The restaurant, SAGAYA, is designed to fully immerse diners in Japanese nature
    • Each month the display changes to mimic the current season

Catering for eight guests a day, the immersive space has been created as a multisensory dining experience. The projections were developed to reflect Japanese nature, with blossoming flowers, birds and butterflies all featured.

The projections change to correspond with the real seasons so that in April, for example, diners are surrounded by cherry blossom. In addition, the projected objects also respond to the dishes on the table, as well as to diners’ movements, ensuring that each dining experience is unique. ‘When a dish is placed on the table, the scenic world contained in the dish is unleashed, unfolding onto the table and into the surrounding space,’ say the designers.

    The Big Picture

This new collaboration demonstrates how technologist collective teamLab’s interactive design experiences can be taken out of the gallery space and applied to a hospitality setting. For more on the convergence of the physical and digital worlds, see our Awakening Tech macrotrend.
