Milan – Danish textile manufacturer Kvadrat has created an exhibition that showcases its sustainable Solid Textile Board.

  • Kvadrat recently bought a majority stakeholder share in upcycling start-up Really
  • Really creates Solid Textile Board out of used textiles

The high-density material is made from end-of-life cotton and wool sourced from the fashion and textile industries, household refuse and Kvadrat’s own waste. The material has been created to ‘challenge the architecture and design sector to rethink their use of resources’.

On display during the 2017 Milan Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the exhibition will feature items by British designer Max Lamb and Dutch artist and designer Christien Meindertsma. Meindertsma illuminates the manufacturing process of the Solid Textile Board, while Lamb demonstrates the potential uses of this new material.

‘We see Really as a first step on a circular journey that will help us fast track to a time when industrially manufactured products will be made – and remade – from old versions of themselves,’ said Anders Byriel, CEO of Kvadrat, in a statement.

The Big Picture

In line with Whole-system Thinking, companies and organisations including Kvadrat and Realdania By & Byg are demonstrating the practical potential of upcycling.
