The foundations of wellness

24 : 02 : 2017 One Carter Lane : Workplace : Wellness

London – One Carter Lane is the first building in Europe to achieve WELL certification, a wellness-based global building standard.

  • The WELL system measures, certifies and monitors features of the built environment that have an impact on health and wellbeing, such as air, water and light
  • The design of the space, which is owned by engineering consultancy Cundall, is informed by the company’s research into acoustics and biophilia

The Cundall headquarters at One Carter Lane features a variety of elements designed to improve employee wellbeing, from recreational activities such as yoga to brass surfaces with antimicrobial properties in the kitchen and café areas.

A series of ‘active green walls’ combine with a fan system to filter and clean the air, while sound-blocking trellis panels and acoustic baffles reflect the company’s research into acoustics and biophilia.

According to Alan Fogarty, sustainability partner at Cundall, buildings that meet the requirements for WELL certification minimise the use of design aspects that ‘create stress on its systems such as the cardiovascular system or mental wellbeing’.

The Big Picture

The wellness revolution continues apace, and brands are increasingly recognising the need for efficient, sustainable workplaces that help employees to be more productive. For more on the future of the office environment, download our free Workplace Summit Report 2016 here.
