Urban dress: Wang ponders The Polarity Paradox

New York – Anyone invited to attend Alexander Wang’s autumn/winter 2014 fashion show had to go to the furthest reaches of Brooklyn to look at his post-apocalyptic vision of future fashion.

Wang said that ‘extreme conditions and survival’ were the inspirations for the collection, which featured woollen versions of fishermen’s vests with pockets for the urban warrior that were more suitable for notebooks and smartphones than bait and tackle. Some clothing was made from heat-activated leather that changed colour during the show, an effect hinted at in the invitation, which was readable only when the recipients used the warmth of their palms to reveal the text.

The polar vortex and extreme living conditions may have been Wang’s talking points, but we see hints of The Polarity Paradox in his designs. For more on the main macrotrend of our Spring/Summer 2014 Trend Briefing, watch our preview video and book tickets for the event on Eventbrite.
