Tokyo – Challenged to make the most of a tiny plot of land in the Toshima ward of Tokyo, On Design Partners created a structure that functions as a home during the week and a shop at the weekend.
With only 355 square feet to work with, the architects designed a two-storey building with living space upstairs and a downstairs shop. Weekend shoppers can peruse the owner’s collection of Scandinavian homewares – each has its own story and the owner says that the process is more like ‘meeting’ an object than buying it.
As we described in our Hacked Home microtrend, consumers are finding novel solutions for squeezing extra functionality out of their living spaces. At the same time, the Slash/Slash Generation continue to build their lives around multiple careers that reflect their full personalities. We can expect more purpose-built homes, with multiple uses, as this talented tribe climbs the career ladder.
