London – Design duo JAMESPLUMB have created a new interior retail space in the basement of Hostem’s Redchurch Street store.
The Chalk Room features unique pieces from JAMESPLUMB, along with carefully curated items from designers such as Alice Waese and tailor Geoffrey B Small.
The interior is inspired in part by Hannah Plumb’s grandfather, who was head tailor at Gieves & Hawkes. The walls have a matte, chalky finish, in reference to the tailor’s chalk, while antique furniture with disorientating interventions create an eerie, nostalgic showcase for the clothing.
‘Our focus is on how the products are curated,’ explains Hostem owner James Brown. ‘We hope to change our customers’ perception of the clothing they wear by highlighting the craft and skill of the designers.’
Designers are increasingly inspired by nostalgic cues, and are remembering more forgotten skills, customs and technologies. For more, read LS:N Global’s Revivalism macrotrend report.
