14 : 07 : 2011 Craft : Paris : Emotional Functionality

Paris – French designer Jean-Baptiste Fastrez has created a series of hairdryers with hand-crafted wooden handles.

Each of Fastrez’s Tomahawk series uses the same mechanical part, but has a separate hand-crafted handle, changing not only the aesthetic but also the functionality of the final products.

‘The idea is to forge a partnership between industrial and craft production,’ the designer tells LS:N Global. ‘I wanted to use the best elements of both practices to produce one object.’

As LS:N Global noted in our Tech Futures report, today’s consumers seek products that evoke an emotional response, and that offer comfort and reassurance. By bringing natural materials and hand-crafted details into technological design, a more emotional connection can be formed between user and object.
