Paris – Cars are influencing fashion in a modern, sportswear-meets-dashboard direction.
‘I was inspired by car interiors,’ Phoebe Philo, designer for Céline told press at her show in Paris. She said she finds women in cars ‘very seductive’ and produced a visual lookbook for the autumn/winter 2011 season full of 1970s images of women at the wheel. There was a luxurious feel to the minimalist and sleek collection that focused on slim tailored coats – pleat detailing and angular shapes dominated – with contrasting textures of leather alongside bonded wool or fur.
As we have seen, other fashion designers reference the 1970s sportswear mood for autumn/winter 2011, Philo stands out from the crowd in her approach of mixing archive aesthetics with a modern, graphic minimalism.
