10 : 02 : 2017 Onemeal : Convenience Culture : Meal Replacement

Denmark – Onemeal is a new meal replacement product based around micro-algae.

  • The powder-based product is rich in micronutrients such as protein, calcium and omega-3 fatty acids
  • Onemeal has been created in collaboration with Michelin-starred chefs Francis Cardenau and Mikkel Maarbjerg

While established meal replacement products such as Soylent and Huel go out of their way to appear inorganic, Onemeal takes the opposite approach, confidently trumpeting its origins in nature and its green credentials. The powder-based product just requires the addition of hot water to create a meal rich in macronutrients such as protein, essential omega-3 fatty acids, beta-carotene, iron and calcium.

Unlike some competitors that target young male technology workers for whom meal replacement products might largely be about efficiency, Onemeal promotes itself as a highly sustainable future food, with a low environmental impact and minimal carbon footprint.

A statement on the brand’s website suggests that the product could be useful in ‘increasing the amount of calories in places where hunger and starvation are present compared to markets where obesity poses a threat to the general level of health’.

The Big Picture

Convenience, taste and nutrition are no longer enemies when it comes to how we eat, with brands looking to tick all three boxes for time-poor, health-conscious foodies. Read our Convenience Culture market reports, parts 1 and 2 for more.
