Paris – Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain has launched an online extension of The Great Animal Orchestra exhibition that gives users the opportunity to conduct nature’s musical ensemble.

  • The site covers a number of regions and sections of the animal kingdom
  • It has been set up to highlight the threat animals face while immersing viewers in an aural and visual experience

The website is organised into various acoustic landscapes, which are then split into a number of sections of the animal kingdom. Presenting a number of different soundscapes, the stylised site offers an interactive experience that reveals the ecology of the soundscapes, as well as the forces behind it.

The Great Animal Orchestra exhibition in Paris runs until 8 January. It is inspired by American musician and bio-acoustician Bernie Krause, who collected more than 5,000 hours of natural habitat sounds. The exhibition brings together the work of artists from all over the world.

With each section, information on where the recording was taken, geographical highlights and information on the animals located in that region are provided. It has been set up to immerse viewers in an ‘aesthetic meditation’ while highlighting the threat that a number of endangered species face.

The Big Picture

The idea of bringing sound to life through immersive and well-executed platforms is adding another layer to storytelling. See how podcasts are also adapting to a visual-first culture in our Seeing Sound microtrend.
