Philanthropic furniture

14 : 11 : 2016 Ikea : Brandstanding : Refugee Crisis

Norway – Ikea has created a replica Syrian home inside its flagship store to raise awareness of the refugee crisis.

  • The interior is modelled on the home of Rana, a refugee woman who lives in Damascus
  • The campaign is a collaboration between the furniture store retailer and Red Cross Norway

Ikea is known for its immersive shop floors, which replicate real domestic environments, but the 25-square-metre apartment that was built within the Slependen store is unique in having a philanthropic, rather than a retail, purpose.

The imitation two-bedroom apartment, designed by advertising agency POL, was designed to raise awareness of the refugee crisis in an impactful way. Ikea-style product tags were attached to the furnishings, telling refugees’ stories and giving information about how to donate to Red Cross.

‘We at Ikea are committed to having a positive impact on both people and the planet,’ the firm said in a statement. ‘The apartment and the messages it brought to customers and co-workers received great and positive attention.’

The Big Picture

As we have seen in our macrotrend The Dislocated World, the planet is now gripped by fear and discord. With people losing trust in their governments, brands are stepping up to help the causes they believe in. For more, see the Brandstanding section in our Backlash Brands macrotrend.
