Farm-to-closet

27 : 10 : 2016 John Berner : Alexander Stutterheim : Knitwear

Sweden – John Sterner is a new slow fashion knitwear range that is transparent about its production methods.

  • The brand was founded by designer Alexander Stutterheim, who is known for his high-end mackintoshes
  • A small yellow tag with a serial number similar to that attached to sheep’s ears will be attached to each sweater

The farm-to-closet knitwear has been created to combine a love of sustainable living with high-end fashion, favouring quality over quantity with only two styles available, one of which is produced entirely by hand and the other created with minimal machinery.

‘At no stage shall production be rushed, or corners cut,’ states the website. ‘This is a life investment piece.’ With each sweater taking around a week to knit, the brand offers a contrast to the buy-now, throw-away-tomorrow mentality of fast fashion.

All the sweaters will be produced from a herd of about 50 sheep and Stutterheim is developing an app that will enable customers to follow the herd’s movements, notifying them when the sheep are sheared and the wool dyed and knitted, thus strengthening their connection to the garment.

The Big Picture

Brands such as John Sterner and Kering exemplify the luxury market’s propensity for sustainability in the manner of Whole-system Thinking.
