London – Designer Kailu Guan has created a clothing range that uses augmented reality to add virtual layers to the garments.
When a smartphone is pointed at the clothes, the screen-printed patterns activate the app into playing a programmed set of digital additions, which appear to form part of the garments themselves.
Guan has made the clothes from materials such as suede, wool and cotton, and garments are then enhanced with a range of virtual effects, from huge spikes and dots to rippling water.
‘I think Augmented Reality (AR) is a method to move fashion beyond a tactile medium; it’s creating a 4D space for storytelling,’ Guan tells LS:N Global. ‘There will be more powerful ways for the wearer to relate to and interact with clothing through AR.’
Designers are combining technology and fashion to extend the limits of creativity and to open up the possibility of garments that endlessly adapt to changes in taste and mood. See our Neuro Activate to find out more.
