Art in the Valley

11 : 02 : 2016 Pace Gallery : TeamLab : Exhibition

California, US – Silicon Valley’s first major contemporary art gallery has opened with an exhibition by 400-strong art-technology collective teamLab.

  • Pace Gallery’s Menlo Park location occupies 20,000 square feet in the heart of the West’s technology industry
  • Established in early 2016, the Pace Art + Technology programme is dedicated to showing works that emphasise digital methods

After testing the waters in 2014 with a temporary exhibition, the new permanent gallery is the first of its kind in Silicon Valley, a place notoriously uninterested in collecting art. The fact that it occupies a former Tesla workshop will do it some favours, as will the decision to host technologists and artists teamLab for its inaugural exhibition.

Living Digital Space and Future Parks, which runs until July 2016, features 20 works, many of which have an interactive element. The piece Crystal Universe, a room made from 50,000 LED lights, senses when someone enters, infinitely changing the installation. Visitors can also use a smartphone app to request different patterns and sequences.

‘We are honoured to share some of our most recently created artworks and hope the universality of their themes – creativity, play, exploration, immersion, life and fluidity – will seep into the broader conscience,’ says teamLab founder Toshiyuki Inoko.
