15 : 07 : 2015 Alice Theodorou : Longterm Design Manifesto : Redevelopment

London – Royal College of Art student Alice Theodorou is fighting back against short-term thinking with her latest project, The Future Will Just Have to Wait.

  • Examines an alternative scenario for the Mount Pleasant Mail Centre, due to become one of London’s biggest development sites despite public opposition
  • The project is inspired by a 40,000-year-old figurine of a woman carved from mammoth ivory – a symbol of temporality

Theodorou’s satirical work maligns institutional and political short-sightedness, and in particular, the financially driven redevelopment projects springing up across London without the consent of local authorities.

The Future Will Just Have to Wait examines an alternative scenario for the controversial Mount Pleasant Mail Centre redevelopment in Farringdon. Theodorou’s work considers the site in the context of a 10,000-year masterplan.

‘By anticipating the challenges that London will face over the next 10,000 years (including population growth and then decline, rising sea levels, stricter energy targets, future space exploration and language obsolescence), the building addresses generational-scale questions and sets the agenda for its sustainable growth,’ Theodorou tells LS:N Global.

The Big Picture: Consumers are looking for brands that think ahead. Our macrotrend, The Immortal Brand, examines how frustration with short-termism is fuelling a desire for long-term thinking.
