The Discovery Wall for the Weill Cornell Medical College by Hirsh & Mann and Squint/Opera

Research in motion: Artwork under the lens

New York – Agencies Hirsh & Mann and Squint/Opera have created the Discovery Wall for the Weill Cornell Medical College, an installation that uses 2,800 screens and lenticular lenses to celebrate the donations of philanthropists.

A prototype of the artwork was shown at The Future Laboratory HQ during LS:N Global's Technology Futures Forum. Now the full construction has been placed in the lobby of the WCMC.

The Discovery Wall  uses LCD screens that are magnified by the lenses. This creates the effect whereby the content changes depending on how far, or from what angle, the viewer sees it.

The premise was to create three viewing conditions. The macro-view from the other side of the street gives people a large-scale image, the meta-view also provides people with information in text format, then the most up-close micro-view allows people to see more content, information and individual high-resolution imagery.

The artwork is designed to be permanent, which means that a selection of new content can be uploaded and the installation will never become repetitive.

‘It was really about making something that had a sensitivity to the space, rather than making something that was simply interactive for its own sake,’ says Daniel Hirschmann, founder of Hirsch & Mann.

The Discovery Wall is the latest in a wave of installations and artworks that create an emotional connection to science. For more, read our Re-enlightenment Rising macrotrend.
