Eindhoven – Dutch designer David Derksen has created the Dewar line of glassware that takes its inspiration from laboratory flasks and thermos containers.
The glass lamps and vases have double walls just like a thermos, which gives them a valve-like aesthetic reminiscent of Victorian science experiments. The collection takes its name from the 19th-century scientist James Dewar, who was researching conditions at low temperatures when he invented the thermos.
Two pieces in the collection, the Flask Vase and the Flask Light, are made in the same way as the thermos, comprising two layers of glass, with layers of silver between. The Dewar Light and the Dewar Vase are made from borosilicate glass that has been darkened by radiation.
This is a great way for a designer to make functional objects that tell a story. For more on how brands are taking the idea of a laboratory and extending it to their products, spaces and services, read our Lab Talk microtrend.
