Milan – Berlin- and Singapore-based designer Werner Aisslinger presented the Chair Farm installation at Milan Furniture Fair featuring a chair that is grown rather than manufactured.
The chair is made from a plant that is trained to grow in a steel frame. Once the wood has reached maturity and formed the correct shape, the chair is released. The installation envisages a time when furniture will no longer be transported great distances at a cost to the environment, but grown on location.
This is a great way of harnessing a natural process to create an environmentally sound design. For more on how a fascination with plant life is spurring designers to experiment with forms that mimic nature, read our Botanica macro Inspire.
