Bit by bit: A new DIY kit for imaginative gamers

London – London-based start-up Technology Will Save Us aims to enable people to be more creative with technology, rather than just consume it. Its DIY Gamer Kit is intended to do just that, encouraging children and adults to build their own gaming devices.

The kit comes with all the pieces needed to build a hand-held games console, complete with an 8×8 LED screen, customised software and an Arduino Uno board, which can be used to code your own games. The result looks like an old-school Game Boy, plays lo-fi games such as Snake – which is included – and provides endless possibilities for the imaginative gamer.

The purpose of the DIY Gamer Kit is not to replace smartphone or video games, but to provide kids with a different perspective on technology. ‘We want to empower kids to see what they are capable of, to get them excited about technology and making, and even inform their future interests,’ say Technology Will Save Us co-founders Daniel Hirschmann and Bethany Koby.

Members of Generation I – those born after 2002 – are growing up immersed in a technological world, where their curiosity about building, gaming and coding is almost intuitive. To learn more, read our Coder Culture microtrend.
