Beat that: New iPad app is music to the ears

Belgium – Brussels-based label Vlek Records and music collective Herrmutt Lobby have launched an iPad app called Beatsurfing, which enables users to design unique digital instruments using the iPad screen.

The app features four basic sound buttons that can be sized, arranged, mapped and built on to create a personalised instrument, which is played by dragging a finger across the screen.

‘The iPad is not accurate as a percussion instrument. If you want to play by hitting any type of interface, you should be hitting pads or drums,’ a Beatsurfing representative told The Creators Project. ‘But developing a piece of music by surfing your fingers on the screen and putting your sounds and controllers anywhere on the screen at the same time as you build your track is something fresh.’

This is a great example of an app that maximises the potential of the iPad’s functionality and creates an interactive experience in the digital world. Find out more in our Future Media Landscapes macrotrend.
