Rotterdam – A new navigation app aims to help users find something they weren’t necessarily looking for. The free Serendipitor app, developed by Mark Shepard at V2_ Institute for the Unstable Media, uses Google Maps’ API to find alternative routes.
‘Finding your way from point A to point B is not the problem these days,’ explains Shepard. ‘Instead, maintaining consciousness along the way is becoming more difficult.’
The user begins by entering a destination for which the Serendipitor suggests various routes. These will be of varying lengths, depending on how much time the user has. Actions inspired by artists such as Fluxus, Vito Acconci and Yoko Ono are then introduced along the way. These could include: ‘Walk towards the heart of the city. If the city has no heart, give it one.’
