Barcelona – The Mother Journal is a quarterly magazine that uses personal storytelling and fresh art direction to cast motherhood in a contemporary light.

  • Celebrates the many aspects of modern mothers’ lives beyond parenting
  • Features diverse content to give a broad view of different women’s experiences

Designed by Barcelona-based Lorena Manhães, The Mother Journal takes a storybook approach to styling, with illustrations, full-bleed photography and a hand-crafted feel. Each issue addresses three subjects interpreted through a collaboration between a writer and an artist. The magazine features stories, interviews, recipes and a pull-out poster for children.

The thoughtful content aims to spark discussion around the complex and challenging experiences faced by parents, and steers clear of the didactic tone common to mainstream publications. Its compact size, elegant structure and storybook aesthetic are designed with the modern mother in mind.

The Big Picture

The portrayal of motherhood in the media is undergoing a transformation, something LS:N Global identified in 2015 with the launch of Australian parenting magazine Lunch Lady. For more multifaceted approaches to motherhood, see our No-Mos, Mo-Mos and Fu-Mos tribe.
