Milan – Alongside its ONYX sofa, made from a combination of carbon fibre and volcanic stone, Peugeot Design Lab presented a series of seven other ‘alliances of materials’ – poetic pairings of hyper-technological materials juxtaposed against earthy raw surfaces – at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan.
Created in reference to Peugeot’s ONYX concept car, a hybrid of technologically advanced and natural materials, the ONXY sofa is also a story of contrasts. One half is made from raw organic lava stone crafted solely by hand and the other half is formed from carbon fibre with a silhouette defined by a digital scan of the rock.
In an exhibit reminiscent of our Precious Precision micro Inspire, seven sculptures of other striking polarised material pairings were presented as designs for product and furniture lines. These included red ferrous jasper with steel, and quartz crystal with aluminium.
Peugeot has a 200-year history of industrial creativity and design, and in the current age of Convergence Culture automotive brands continue to present projects that appeal to a wider audience of design thinkers and show versatility across other design platforms.
